2014 Sleep Out: Legislative Edition
Last month Covenant House New Jersey Executive Director Jill Rottmann, Members of the Legislature, and the homeless youth served by Covenant House held a press conference kicking off the 2014 Sleep Out: Legislative Edition. On April 11, 2014 legislators throughout the State of New Jersey will be invited to sleep on the grounds outside of the State House in Trenton for one night in solidarity with homeless youth.
This legislative sleep out will raise awareness for the plight of kids on the street. It will also help raise the necessary funds to support homeless, runaway and trafficked youth throughout our state who are served by Covenant House.
“These government leaders will unite to sleep out in solidarity with homeless kids,” said Kevin Ryan, President of Covenant House International. “Together they will become a unified voice for hundreds of homeless and trafficked kids with no voice of their own, kids who are neglected, forgotten and cast aside. With the funds and awareness raised, this Sleep Out will save lives.” A group of committed legislators have offered to be co chairs for the event, reaching out to their colleagues on both sides of the aisle and asking them to participate in this unprecedented event.
I am honored to join my fellow co-chairs including Assemblyman Webber representing the 26th legislative district; Senator Vitale representing the 19th legislative district; Senator Beck of district 12; Senator Ruiz of district 29; Assemblywoman Casagrande of district 12; Assemblywoman Watson-Coleman of district 15.
